1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale Coupé

0295 EUroadItaly
Engine
3.0L Colombo short-block V12
Colour
Rosso Rubino (red) with deep red coves

Chassis 0295 EU is the first Ferrari 250 Europa built and, more broadly, the earliest 3-litre Colombo V-12 grand touring Ferrari ever produced — effectively the prototype from which the celebrated 250 GT lineage descended. One of only three 250 Europa coupes bodied by Vignale to a distinctive Giovanni Michelotti design, it was unveiled at the 1953 Paris Salon and subsequently passed through numerous American owners before a comprehensive, five-year restoration. The car has since accumulated an impressive concours record, including Best of Show honours and a Ferrari Classiche Red Book certification confirming matching numbers throughout.

Maintenance & restoration

  1. 2008Engine rebuild
    Patrick Ottis

The original Colombo 3-litre V-12 was fully rebuilt, including fitting of new pistons.

Carried out as part of the broader restoration programme.

  2. 2008Restoration
    Perfect Reflections

Comprehensive five-year ground-up restoration covering all mechanical and cosmetic aspects. Aluminium bodywork stripped to bare metal and refinished in a two-tone Rosso Rubino and Nero scheme replicating 1953 evidence. Interior retrimmed in beige leather. All running gear and ancillary systems rebuilt.

Commissioned and overseen by Brian Hoyt. Period photographs were studied extensively to ensure accurate replication of original details.

  3. 2016Inspection
    Ferrari Classiche

Ferrari Classiche certification carried out, confirming numbers-matching chassis, engine, and coachwork. Gearbox and rear differential replaced with correct-type components bearing Ferrari Classiche stampings.

Red Book issued as a result of the certification process.

  4. Restoration

Preliminary disassembly and partial restoration work initiated by Gilbert Walton, but left incomplete when the car was sold.

Work began in the mid-1980s; the car remained partly disassembled at the time of the 2008 sale.

  5. Bodywork
    Perfect Reflections

Side coves refinished in a thin coat of deep red paint to correct their colour back toward the original very dark red, replacing the near-black Nero finish applied during the main restoration.

Undertaken after additional study of period evidence by the consignor and Brian Hoyt following the sale.

Are you the owner of this car?

This car's public record is built from its auction and competition history. Register your ownership and privately add your own records to make it a verified Legacy Metrics passport — provenance that backs your car's value at sale and gives your insurer evidence to price against. Roy reviews and verifies every registration personally.

Each chassis record is compiled from public auction archives and links to its source material. Ownership, competition and maintenance entries are extracted from those catalogue listings by an LLM, which can make mistakes — please contact us with any corrections. The summary is Legacy Metrics’ own writing; we do not reproduce catalogue text.

“Full” and “partial” documentation labels indicate how well each entry is corroborated in the underlying sources, not an audit of the car’s physical paperwork. Names of recent or living owners are withheld for privacy.
