1953 Ferrari 166 MM

0272 MracingItaly
Engine
V12 with five-speed gearbox

Ferrari 166 MM chassis 0272 M, the fifth of thirteen built for 1953, left the factory in early 1953 wearing unique spider coachwork attributed to Aurelio Lampredi and possibly constructed by Ferrari itself. Its racing career began immediately with the 1953 Giro di Sicilia and Mille Miglia, and it later gained cinematic fame as a featured vehicle in both a Shell documentary and the MGM film The Racers, driven by Emmanuel de Graffenried and Kirk Douglas. Subsequent American ownership brought extensive vintage competition activity in California and the Pacific Northwest. The car retains all original mechanical components, confirmed by marque historian Marcel Massini and supported by metallurgical certification, and has competed in the Mille Miglia Storica as recently as 2010.

Maintenance & restoration

  1. 1953
    Bodywork

Prior to or during the 1953 Mille Miglia, the car was fitted with a full-width windshield and a slightly revised grille configuration among other detail changes.

Several of these modifications were reversed or altered again by the time of the September 1953 Gran Premio Supercortemaggiore.

  2. 1953
    Repair

The nose was damaged in a minor racing accident during the 1953 season, resulting in a changed nose shape visible in period photographs.

Damage occurred before the car was sold to Alberto Luongo for the 1954 season.

  3. Inspection
    German specialist (unnamed)

Metallurgical analysis conducted at twenty points on the chassis and welds by a German specialist, producing a 97-page certificate confirming that all steel is correct in age, composition, and dimensions per the original GILCO frame specifications.

Cost approximately €15,000; the certificate supports the car's claim to full structural originality as verified by historian Marcel Massini.

  4. Bodywork

The nose was restored to its original 1953 shape after having been altered following the racing accident sustained during that season.

Described as recently completed at time of cataloguing; the bodywork overall is reported to be approximately 80 percent original.

  5. Engine rebuild

A full rebuild of the V-12 engine was carried out.

  6. Modification

Several reversible mechanical upgrades were made to improve usability in historic events: electronic ignition fitted, alternator uprated, an auxiliary electric cooling fan added, and the five-speed gearbox converted to full synchronisation.

All changes are described as fully reversible to original specification.

Each chassis record is compiled from public auction archives and links to its source material. Ownership, competition and maintenance entries are extracted from those catalogue listings by an LLM, which can make mistakes — please contact us with any corrections. The summary is Legacy Metrics’ own writing; we do not reproduce catalogue text.

“Full” and “partial” documentation labels indicate how well each entry is corroborated in the underlying sources, not an audit of the car’s physical paperwork. Names of recent or living owners are withheld for privacy.
