1964 MG B Alloy Roadster

G-HN3/45748racingUnited Kingdom

BRX 854B is a 1964 MG B roadster built by the Abingdon competitions department and believed to be the last surviving genuine Works MG B. Equipped with an experimental BMC B-Series engine, close-ratio gearbox, competition suspension, and large-capacity aluminium fuel tank, it competed on the 1964 Spa-Sofia-Liège and 1965 RAC rallies before passing into private hands for further rallying. After three decades in storage it was sympathetically restored in 2007 to original Works specification by Mark Tipping, retaining matching-numbers drivetrain and original bodywork throughout. It holds a valid FIA HTP to 2032 and is confirmed by the Abingdon Experimental Register.

Maintenance & restoration

  1. 2007Restoration
    Mark Tipping

Comprehensive period-correct restoration carried out to the exact original Works specification. The original steel monocoque, alloy body panels, and matching-numbers engine and gearbox were all retained and refurbished wherever feasible; a hand-made wiring loom was produced and original or correct new-old-stock parts were sourced throughout. Interior was professionally rebuilt to 1964 ex-Works specification including period details such as the map pocket, quilted transmission tunnel cover, and BMC Competition Department roll hoop.

Offside rear wing had previously been replaced with a steel item during factory competition use; this condition was retained. John Hewitt, an MG historian, noted the exceptional originality of the underside and survival of original Works preparation features.

  2. Mechanical
    Vendor's motorsports outfit

Ongoing mechanical upkeep to a high standard carried out by the current owner's motorsports outfit, covering all aspects of the car's running condition. Configuration was also modified for circuit use with Appendix K roll cage, stiffer front springs, revised anti-roll bar, and removal of overdrive gearbox; original rally components retained separately.

Work undertaken after acquisition in 2010; no specific dated service episodes are recorded beyond general references to continuous high-standard maintenance.
