The 1931 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria, chassis DV-PC-1224, carries bespoke one-off coachwork by LeBaron featuring an exceptionally long hood, a steeply raked windshield, and a distinctive coach-sill body construction. Originally supplied through Luis Angel Firpo, the former Argentine boxing champion who held the Stutz distributorship for all of South America, the car spent decades in Argentina before returning to the United States in 1974. Following several American ownerships and a concours-quality restoration by RM Auto Restoration, it achieved Best of Show at the 2019 Quail and was nominated for Best of Show at Pebble Beach in 2016.

Maintenance & restoration

  1. Modification

Fenders were fitted with skirting and a beaded molding, the hood was lengthened through addition of metal, and a distinctive double-bead molding was leaded onto the hood and rolled into the surrounding bodywork. Likely mechanical upgrades were also carried out at this time.

Evidence for these changes was visible in photographs from the mid-1960s and confirmed by witness marks found during the later restoration. Work is attributed to Firpo's practice of updating older cars to reflect current styling.

  2. Modification

The car's non-original Buick engine was replaced with a correct 1931 Stutz DV-32 unit prior to sale.

Carried out during or prior to Dr. Vesley's ownership; the Buick engine had been installed at some point during the car's time in Argentina.

  3. Bodywork

Fenders were returned to the original stock Stutz configuration, reversing the earlier skirted-and-beaded modification.

Carried out by William Bools in Cincinnati as part of his ongoing but incomplete work on the car.

  4. Restoration
    RM Auto Restoration

A comprehensive concours-quality restoration was completed, preserving the car's distinctive styling elements including the coach-sill construction, raked windshield, and elongated hood.

Commissioned by the third American owners; the restoration was carried out at RM's facility in Blenheim, Ontario.
