The 1955 Arnolt-Bristol Bolide, chassis 3005, is the sixth example constructed of only 130 built, featuring Bertone coachwork styled by Franco Scaglione over a Bristol 404 chassis powered by a 1,971cc twin-carburettor six-cylinder engine. Originally finished in light green, the car was comprehensively restored — including full engine rebuild and acid-dipped chassis — during the late 1980s by Bristol specialist Steve Krinsky, emerging repainted red. The car has since accumulated fewer than 4,000 road miles under a single owner across more than three decades.

Maintenance & restoration

  1. Restoration
    Steve Krinsky

Comprehensive restoration encompassing a full engine rebuild, acid-dipping of the chassis and body, repaint from original light green to red, and replacement of the brown upholstery with black while retaining the original Italian seats.

Carried out during Marvin Johnson's ownership in the late 1980s to early 1990s; Krinsky is described as a Bristol specialist based in St Paul, Minnesota.

  2. Modification

Original Solex carburettors replaced with Weber units; the forward carburettor was fitted with a slimmer Vokes air filter to clear the bonnet due to the greater height of the Weber units.

Carried out as part of or alongside the restoration period.

  3. Modification

Water jacket welded around the rear freeze plug during the engine rebuild to address known cold-start fragility of these engines.

Executed concurrently with the engine rebuild portion of the restoration.

  4. Mechanical

Water pump rebuilt and gearbox overhauled, including fitting of new shims and shift detents.

Described as the most recent service work; gearbox work performed by IN Racing of Nottingham, UK.

Each chassis record is compiled from public auction archives and links to its source material. Ownership, competition and maintenance entries are extracted from those catalogue listings by an LLM, which can make mistakes — please contact us with any corrections. The summary is Legacy Metrics’ own writing; we do not reproduce catalogue text.

“Full” and “partial” documentation labels indicate how well each entry is corroborated in the underlying sources, not an audit of the car’s physical paperwork. Names of recent or living owners are withheld for privacy.
