1958 MG A Roadster
- Engine
- 1.8L inline-four

A 1958 MG A originally built for the US market as a coupé, subsequently converted to right-hand drive, stripped of its roof, and progressively developed into a competition machine. Period circuit appearances at Silverstone and Snetterton attest to its racing pedigree. Over decades the car received extensive mechanical upgrades including multiple engine rebuilds culminating in a 1,800cc unit producing around 150bhp, a four-synchro MGB overdrive gearbox, Quaife limited-slip differential, disc brakes, and full roll-over protection. MOT records from 1991 to 2015 confirm very low road mileage throughout its competition-oriented life.

- —Silverstone circuit races
Period competition appearances at Silverstone documented in the car's history, confirming long-standing circuit use.
- —Snetterton circuit races
Period competition appearances at Snetterton documented alongside Silverstone entries, reinforcing the car's historic racing association.
Maintenance & restoration
- 2006Engine rebuild
Full engine strip and inspection during winter 2006; components renewed included big-end bearings, timing chain, distributor drive, cam followers, valve springs, high-performance oil pump, Piper 300 rally cam, and roller rocker gear. Cylinder head skimmed to 11.1:1 compression with inlet and exhaust ports reshaped and gas-flowed.
Also included fitting a lightened flywheel, refreshed clutch, upgraded cooling system with electric fan and high-capacity radiator, Lumenition ignition, and a replacement MGB starter motor.
- —Modification
Roof removed as part of conversion from coupé body to open competition configuration; car also converted from left-hand to right-hand drive at some point prior to 1974.
Both the RHD conversion and roof removal were completed before 1974 according to the catalogue.
- —Modification
Original three-synchromesh gearbox replaced with a later four-synchromesh MGB overdrive unit; transmission tunnel modified to accommodate the new gearbox.
Described as carried out during earlier, undated works prior to the 2006 engine overhaul.
- —Engine rebuild
Initial high-performance engine build, details unspecified, carried out approximately twelve years before the 2006 strip-down, i.e. around 1994.
The 2006 overhaul notes this was the engine's first strip-down since the earlier build roughly twelve years prior.
- —Engine rebuildSlark Racing
Subsequent engine rebuild by Slark Racing increasing displacement to approximately 1,800cc; internal work included balanced connecting rods and crankshaft, uprated pistons, tubular exhaust manifold with large-bore tuned system, and high-output oil pump with supplementary oil cooling. Quoted power output approximately 150bhp.
Additional work referenced in the history file involving Simon Hadfield, Maxspeeding, and Hungerford preceded or accompanied this rebuild.
- —Mechanical
Chassis and braking upgrades comprising front disc brakes with MGB calipers and servo assistance, uprated suspension with telescopic dampers, anti-roll bar, revised geometry, Quaife limited-slip differential with 4.3:1 ratio, Panhard rod, and anti-tramp bars.
Alloy wheels, bucket seat, TRS harness, roll-over protection, and a competition fuel cell were also fitted as part of the weight-reduction and safety-focused build.
