A 1932 Ford roadster legendary in American drag racing history, campaigned by the Berardini Brothers across Los Angeles-area strips from 1950 to 1955 under the number '404 Jr.' The car ran a stroked flathead Ford with an Iskenderian 404 camshaft, earning championship titles and track records. It later set a World Record at Half Moon Bay in 1961 under subsequent ownership, appeared in the 1954 film Blackboard Jungle, and received a meticulous frame-off restoration circa 2004–2005, culminating in the Bruce Meyer Preservation Award and the Dean Batchelor Award at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Maintenance & restoration

  1. Modification

    A strip of metal was fitted beneath the accelerator pedal after it was accidentally driven into the wooden floorboard during a race, preventing recurrence.

    Modification arose from an incident during Berardini Brothers ownership.

  2. Modification

    Engine replaced with a 354 cu. in. 1955 Chrysler Hemi fitted with an eight-carburettor log manifold, Winfield camshaft, and Vertex magneto. Transmission changed to a 1937 Buick three-speed unit. Halibrand magnesium wheels and a Halibrand quick-change rear axle were fitted.

    Work carried out by Jeano LaCoste in collaboration with Charlie Tabucchi during the mid-1950s.

  3. Modification

    Engine enlarged to 360 cu. in. via overboring, a 6-71 GMC supercharger added, and two-port Hilborn fuel injection fitted.

    Further performance upgrades by LaCoste and Tabucchi, continuing from earlier Hemi modifications.

  4. Modification

    Chrysler Hemi replaced by a Chevrolet small-block V8; original frame retained but a California Street Rods chassis substituted for the running gear.

    Changes made during Rudy Perez's ownership; original frame was preserved.

  5. Restoration
    Dave Crouse's shop, Loveland, Colorado

    Comprehensive frame-off restoration returning the car to its Berardini Brothers racing specification. Work included overboring a flathead block, fitting a new SCAT crankshaft and 8CM connecting rods, reinstating the four-carburettor Edelbrock intake with a synchronisation trick, and sourcing the final Iskenderian 404 camshaft and lifters directly from Ed Iskenderian. Original frame was repaired and retained. Pinstriping was recreated by Alan Johnson to replicate Von Dutch's original work.

    Restoration took nearly two years and was guided by period videos, photographs, and direct interviews with Pat Berardini. Completed approximately 2004–2005.
