The 1928 Mercedes-Benz 630K Sports Tourer, chassis 35419, is one of only 150 examples built between 1926 and 1929, bodied by the Sindelfingen works with a distinctive four-seater sports-tourer body featuring competition-specification bonnet louvres. Originally deployed as a factory entry, the car earned Gold Medals at the 1928 and 1929 Internationale Alpenfahrt under first private owner Dr Robert Krailsheimer. After surviving a crash in Finland in the 1930s and decades of storage, the car was rediscovered in 1989 and fully restored in Germany during the 1990s, subsequently participating in the 2007 Mille Miglia Storica.

Thorough engine overhaul carried out ahead of a planned rally entry. Inspection confirmed the engine was original and had covered limited mileage with minimal wear; all internal components bore matching numbers. Only the pistons and radiator were replaced with new parts.

During the subsequent rally, one of the replacement pistons failed, causing retirement; the engine was repaired afterwards.

  3. Restoration

Following rediscovery in Finland, the car was brought back to Germany and fully rebuilt to original mechanical specification by the new owner with assistance from multiple specialists. Surviving original components — chassis, engine, gearbox, axles, differential, fuel tank, bonnet, doors, and seats — were retained, while the Sindelfingen body was reconstructed using period factory photographs as reference.

Work was carried out over a number of years and completed during the 1990s. Many original body parts survived but not all; reconstruction relied on factory archive photographs numbered 7898 and 7899.

Are you the owner of this car?

This car's public record is built from its auction and competition history. Register your ownership and privately add your own records to make it a verified Legacy Metrics passport — provenance that backs your car's value at sale and gives your insurer evidence to price against. Roy reviews and verifies every registration personally.

Each chassis record is compiled from public auction archives and links to its source material. Ownership, competition and maintenance entries are extracted from those catalogue listings by an LLM, which can make mistakes — please contact us with any corrections. The summary is Legacy Metrics’ own writing; we do not reproduce catalogue text.

“Full” and “partial” documentation labels indicate how well each entry is corroborated in the underlying sources, not an audit of the car’s physical paperwork. Names of recent or living owners are withheld for privacy.
