Chassis 198.040.6500052 is a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, one of 308 produced that year, delivered in Silver Gray Metallic with a special-order red interior and the desirable Rudge wheels. Retained initially by the factory as a show car and exhibited at the 1956 Turin International Automobile Salon, it was subsequently sold to a Milanese owner who entered it in the 1957 Mille Miglia. The car later migrated to the United States before returning to Europe, where it underwent a sympathetic restoration and was subsequently certified by Mercedes-Benz Heritage following structural inspection and repair.

Structural damage to the front-left frame was addressed: the front cross member and steering beam were removed and reinstated to factory specification, deviations from factory standards corrected, two of twenty inspected chassis tubes replaced, the rear axle housing renewed, and the full chassis sandblasted, painted, and refitted.
Work was carried out in Stuttgart following the car's dispatch to Mercedes-Benz Heritage in late 2024; chassis material was tested at 24 locations with no anomalies found, and a formal certification was issued upon completion.
