Chassis 0879 GT is a 1957/58 Ferrari 250 GT berlinetta of the type popularly known as the 'Tour de France', the 15th of only 17 examples constructed in the three-louver, covered-headlight body style. Delivered new to German factory driver Wolfgang Seidel, it was campaigned extensively across Europe from 1958 to 1959, accumulating roughly eleven victories from twenty-two starts. Subsequently passing through a short sequence of German owners before reaching Swedish Ferrari Club founder Christer Mellin, the car underwent a painstaking two-decade restoration completed in the mid-1990s that preserved original coachwork, mechanical components, and upholstery. Ferrari Classiche has since authenticated its fully matching engine, gearbox, and rear axle.

Maintenance & restoration

  1. 1958Maintenance
    Ferrari factory

Engine assembly completed, followed by dynamometer testing on 4 January 1958; confirmed output was 258.2 bhp at 7,200 rpm using competition tipo 130 camshafts and high-compression pistons.

Factory sign-off after initial bench testing.

  2. 1968
    Engine rebuild

Engine overhauled at a workshop in Switzerland, carried out with the backing of the Ferrari factory as documented by a contemporaneous letter.

Commissioned by owner Gary Schmidt; factory involvement confirmed in file correspondence.

  3. 1974Restoration
Multiple workshops including Brandoli, Diena, and Toni (Modena/Maranello area)

A comprehensive, originality-focused restoration was initiated by Christer Mellin, sourcing components directly from the factory in Maranello over numerous visits. The work engaged skilled Swedish craftsmen and Modena-based specialists including Brandoli, Diena, and Toni, retaining as much original coachwork, hardware, mechanical components, and upholstery as possible. Completed approximately twenty years after it began, the car received a bare-metal refinish in amarante with a black bonnet stripe replicating one applied by Seidel in 1959.

Hundreds of photographs and all invoices were retained; restoration concluded in the mid-1990s. The finished car was subsequently road-tested for a Cavallino magazine feature published in April/May 1997.

  4. Inspection
    Ferrari Classiche

Ferrari Classiche authentication confirmed the presence of the original V-12 engine together with the matching-numbers gearbox and rear axle.

Certification establishes the car as fully matching throughout, a relatively rare distinction among surviving 1950s Ferrari competition vehicles.

This car's public record is built from its auction and competition history. Register your ownership and privately add your own records to make it a verified Legacy Metrics passport — provenance that backs your car's value at sale and gives your insurer evidence to price against. Each chassis record is compiled from public auction archives and links to its source material. Ownership, competition and maintenance entries are extracted from those catalogue listings by an LLM, which can make mistakes — please contact us with any corrections. The summary is Legacy Metrics’ own writing; we do not reproduce catalogue text.

“Full” and “partial” documentation labels indicate how well each entry is corroborated in the underlying sources, not an audit of the car’s physical paperwork. Names of recent or living owners are withheld for privacy.
